Learn to get the most out of your film characters when you shoot your video. Film characters could be anyone your shooting they don't have to be actors. The star of your film could be the person that provided the most entertaining shots. As an amateur movie maker try to learn from the beginning that you have the power to encourage a feeling or behavior in your characters.
Tips To Get More From Your Characters
1. Make Your Characters Relax - It's better if they are not afraid or camera shy. You don't want them to be looking at the camera all the time and saying don't film or doing stupid faces because they are getting filmed. Get them used to being in front of a camera.
2. Inspire scenes with them that will be entertaining - Keep your mind open and you will find all kinds of ideas flow through your mind on funny scenes of even small sit down interviews for character build up.
3. Encourage characters to ignore the Camera
4. Get good Audio from your Characters - If your sitting down with them always encourage them to speak clearly and understandably. Simply encouraging people to slow down their speaking and give spaces between words allows much better audio.
5. Make Sure you Characters look Good with Your Angle of Shot - If they have a big zit on one side of their face shoot the other side. Don't show a shot that shows someone's fat ass or something etc.....
6. For Boring Home Videos - You can encourage events that will add highlight and entertainment. For instance imagine filming a 3 legged race after a few drinks have gone down (I would say it's probably best to wait until people have had a few drinks before asking them to do anything crazy). If if you could just get a few suckers to agree to something a little diferent your guaranteed great footage. Or course there are an infinite amount of ideas you could come up with to provide great entertainment and bring the best out of your characters.
